Miek Uittenhout (b. 1981) is a theatre maker, scenographer and visual artist. Miek combines a variety of disciplines in her work, with an important departure point being the exploration of the boundaries between theatre and visual art. For her Theatre Design graduation-project at the Utrecht School of the Arts (2005), she received the ‘Kunstanjer’ (Carnation Award for Art) from the Prince Bernhard Cultural Foundation for up-and-coming talent.
In addition to working as a stage- and costume designer for various theatre companies, Miek has made several visual productions and performances, including Eddie Danst; as well as autonomous work, such as a seven-part series of self-portraits; and theatrical installations, such as HOT, which she presented at the 'Oerol Festival' in 2009. 'Lollipop', her most recent theatre-production, was created in association with the theatre-company 'De Utrechtse Spelen'. The performance is about a woman (played by Lotte Verbeek) trapped in a large glass bell jar. This 60-minute-long performance was declared the hit of the Festival a/d Werf and of the Oerol theatre festival in Terschelling, where it was presented in the summer of 2010.
Using a characteristic, clear and strong visual idiom, Miek steadfastly searches for powerful ways of telling unpretentious stories or showing emotions. Her work is often about the desire to escape from reality and the seductiveness of hiding away in illusion. Her work is sensitive, imaginative, absurd, grotesque, and at times whimsical and wry.
